Action at Gateway Yard
Title:  Action at Gateway Yard

OC 7574 North
Title:  OC 7574 North
Description:  The Northbound (west at this point) empty Ohio & Pennsylvania (OHPA) trash train begins his journey to Youngstown in Negley, Oh. This is not the 1st time the Ohio Central has ever operated this line as the OHPA. Back in the early 1990's, after the Youngstown & Southern became no more, the Ohio Central took over operations, only to give up on it. Years passed and the owner of the line (Columbiana Couty, I THINK, need some help Dave!) wanted the line rebuilt and named the D&R (Dardanville & Russellville?) as the operator, under the name of the Central Columbiana & Pennsylvania (CQPA). Fairly recently, the CQPA stopped paying the bills to the State/County, and they were removed. Did I get that somewhat correct, Dave? I know you are looking :)

OC 7574 North
Title:  OC 7574 North
Description:  The northbound OHPA empty trash train is seen passing under the NS Fort Wayne Line. The two buildings on the right, which I forced into the shot, are remnants from the days when this was an interurban trolly line. The Y&S was converted to a shortline railroad during World War II, and shortly afterwards became a wholly-owned subsidary of the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad.

Description:  Passing along the streets of Boardman...or am I in Youngstown now? They kinda run together...the OHPA train egotiates some of the former Y&S Interurban trackage. Looks it, don't it?

Description:  The OHPA trash train is seen heading down the steep grade that exists between the old Lake Erie & Eastern connection near Center St. and __________ Ave. (help me out, Dave!) in Youngstown. At this point, he is still on Y&S trackage, but will shortly be on what remains of the old LE&E.

OC 7574 North
Title:  OC 7574 North
Description:  The buildings and land of the Gateway Yard are, happily, owned by an individual who appears to have no interest in demolishing this landmark of Youngstown-area railroading. He is a good man, a good man indeed. I am standing on a rather large pile of old ballast, and that stupid drum infront of the train was infested with Hornets and even had a mouse living in it. Next time I go, I WILL be moving it, as it detracts terribly from the shot - nevermind the fact the sun isn't out :)

Description:  Full frame shot of the OHPA trash train. I am saddend that Gateway did not fair very well after the P&LE ceased operations, but, I am proud to be one of the Founding members of the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad Historical Society (yes, this is a shameless plug). Title:  OC 7585 South
Description:  With no cars to pick up from CSX at the Lowellville Interchange, the OHPA power is seen returning to the Mahoning Valley's yard. That weird thing in the sky that makes light came out for this shot - was about friggin time!

OC 7585 South
Title:  OC 7585 South
Description:  With the interchange with CSX complete, the OHPA returns to the Mahoning Valley's yard. The building on the left is the former P&LE Gateway Yard Car Shop, which, almost unbelieveably, is now being used as, well, a car shop! A private contracter has set up shop and has a dozen or so cars in/near the shop building, so it lives on!

Title:  CQPA 667
